How it Works
The 5-step Change of Status
Step 1:
Apply to AEC & Receive Your I-20
Submit your AEC Application, required documents, and $160 application fee.
Required Documents:
- Passport (photo page)
- Current visa and I-94
- Academic Transcript/diploma (if available)
- Bank statement (at least $21,000 USD for 1 year duration)
- Sponsor letter (if applicable)
Step 2
Prepare and File Your Change of Status Application
- Form I-539 (Change of Status Application)
- AEC-issued I-20
- Financial documents
- Personal statement (optional but recommended)
Premium Processing: USCIS will review your application faster (typically about 30 days).
- This is optional and requires an additional fee
- It does not guarantee approval
- Not all cases may qualify
Step 3
Maintain Status While Your Application is Pending
- Remain in the U.S. — leaving will automatically cancel your application
- Requests for Evidence (RFEs) are common and must be responded to on time
- Share all USCIS notices with AEC as soon as you receive them so we can support you
Step 4
Begin Your Program at AEC
- Check-In: Bring your passport and Approval Letter to the school.
- Placement Test: Find the right English level for your class.
- Start Classes: Begin your full-time studies.
- Active Status: Receive your active Form I-20.
